This car is a real find, a legit factory 4-speed big block Galaxie 500XL. This Z-code Galaxie features a 390ci FE series V8 backed by a 4-speed Toploader manual transmission. The car went through a refurbishment some time ago and features a maroon exterior and black bucket seat interior with console. The engine sounds great breathing through dual exhaust with Flowmasters producing the vibes. The engine is a ’68 date coded 390 featuring an Offenhauser aluminum intake manifold, Edelbrock carburetor, and Pertronix breakerless ignition. The Toploader is shifted via a Hurst shifter designed to work with the stock console. We will be making some cosmetic upgrades before offering this car up for sale. It’s going to be sad seeing this one go but as always, we’ve got to make room for more cars.
I just discovered your website and am the guy you wrote the “So you’re ready to buy your first Galaxie or other Full Size Ford” article about! This ’65 looks and sounds as though it’s a very nice driver. What do you think it will be worth when you sell it? I live in Texas and have read of a few different Galaxies down here in Hemmings. By the way, will factory disc brakes from later full size Ford/Merc/Lincoln cars fit the earlier drum brake vehicles?
Scott,
The ’65 Galaxie was a very nice driver quality car. It sold in May for 14K. Being a factory 4-speed car helped a lot. Many ’70’s era Ford’s can lend their disk brake setups to these Galaxies. Just be careful as some of the larger cars such as the big Lincoln’s have the 5 on 5 wheel bolt pattern. Galaxies are 5 on 4.5 inches. Late 70’s Thunderbirds tend to be a popular donor.
